Indian Railways completed the Arch closure of the iconic World highest rail bridge Chenab on Monday, 05 April 2021.

The bridge is being built at cost of ₹ r 1,486 crore and can withstand high wind up to 266 km per hour.

The World highest rail bridge Chenab , part of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla rail link project ( USBRL ).

This was one of most difficult parts of the bridge over Chenab.

Silent features of the arch of the Chenab bridge :

  • The Chenab bridge is 1315 m long and will be 35 meter higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris ( France ).
  • It connects the Kashmir valley to rest of the nation.
  • It is 359 m above the river bed level.
  • Bridge designed to bear earthquake forces of highest intensity zone – V in India.
  • It’s arc consist of steel boxes, which will be filled with concrete to improve stability.
  • The bridge will remain operational at a restricted speed of 30 km/hour even after the removal of one pier / trestle.
  • The height of the cable crane’s pylon at Srinagar End is 127 m which is much taller than Qutub Minar’s which is 72 m.
  • First time on Indian Railways, phased Array Ultrasonic Testing machine used for testing of welds.
  • Bridge designed for blast load in consolation with DRDO for the first time in India.
