India’s first undersea tunnel to come up at Mumbai by 2023

By 2023 , Mumbai will be home to India’s first undersea tunnel, part of the city’s Rs 12,000 crore Coastal Road Project.
The 2.07 kilometre tunnel, which will have two lanes, will be 10 to 70 metres deep sub – surface.
These lands will be bored between Priyadarshini park and Chota Chowpatty at Marine Drive.
The Mumbai Coastal Road Project is an ambitious plan of linking South Mumbai to North Mumbai expected to ease up the traffic.
This undersea tunnel used 1st of it’s kind ventilation system, ” Saccardo “.
A 2,800 tones Tunnel Boring Machine is used as an alternative to drilling and blasting methods to create smooth tunnel walls.
Challenges in undersea construction :
- Risk of sea water entry in to the tunnel
- Stability of the tunnel structure
- Air ventilation to avoid health risks caused by hazardous gas like Carbon Monoxide release
