Srivilliputhur – Meghamalai : 5th tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu

Srivilliputhur – Meghamalai will be 5th and the largest tiger reserve in Tamilnadu.

NTCA has approved the creation of 5th tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu under section 38v (1) of wild life protection.

It has been a long pending demand of environmentalist for a decade, have demanding the creation of 5th tiger reserve to promote wildlife conservation in the state.

Forest officials identified 14 tigers in Meghamalai and Srivilliputhur wild life Sanctuaries.

They also demand to connect the tiger reserve with Tirunelveli wildlife Sanctuary and the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger reserve.

The tiger reserve will spread to 1.48 lakh hectares of land comprising of the Srivilliputhur Gizzled squirrel wildlife Sanctuary, Meghamalai wildlife sanctuary and Tirunelveli wildlife sanctuary.

SMTR could be headed by a field director of the rank of a cheif conservator of forests.

Explaining the importance of SMTR, forest officials said :

“Tiger and disperses in large areas and such disperses and such dispersals are important for exchange of genes”

Cp Rajkumar, wildlife warden and founder of VANAM, said :

Notifying SMTR will also play critical role in protection of Vaigai river, which originates in Meghamalai.

Vaigai river is a lifeline for five districts which provides drinking water to nearly 1 crore people.

India has presently 50 tiger reserves , due to new addition in Tamil Nadu it will became 51 tiger reserves.

Kalakkad Mundanthurai was Tamil Nadu’s first tiger reserve created in 1988 & 1989.
