The New York lawmakers have passed a bill to legalize the use of marijuana drug by adults on Wednesday 31st March 2021.
New York’s state Senate passed the bill with 40 – 23 votes, while the Assembly voted 100 – 49.

The bill creates licenses for producers and distributors.
Development of an adult use marijuana industry in New York has the potential to create 30,000 to 60,000 jobs and also enhances ability to earn $ 350 million annually in tax collection.
The bill will allow for localities to pass laws banning marijuana dispensaries and consumption licenses, with a deadline of nine months after legalisation.
Legalisation of the plant is effective immediately but legal credential sales are not expected to begin for one or two years.
The New York State Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act would add a 13 % tax to retail sales for state and local tax revenue.
New York had allowed marijuana use for medical purposes since 2014.
New York government Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on March 30, 2021 that the city has a storied history of being the progressive capital of the nation and important legalisation will once again carry on that legacy.
The decision was also welcomed by pro – marijuana groups, as thousands of New Yorkers are arrested every year over petty marijuana offenses, of whom most are young and poor and people of colour.
