Freedom of Religion Act : Gujarat assembly passes the bill

Gujarat Assembly has passed the Freedom of Region Act 2003 Bill that panalizes forcible or fraudulent religious conversion by marriage.
The amendment Bill seeks to prohibit and punish religious conversion promising a better lifestyle, devine blessings and impersonation.
The new law has provision for 03 to 10 years in jail and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh if the accused is found guilty.
It amends a 2003 act and seeks to curb the emerging trend in which women are lured to marriage for the purpose of religious conversion.
- The Gujrat Freedom of Religion Act requires religious conversions in Gujrat, India to be approved by a district magistrate.
- This bill was first brought in Gujrat in 2003.
The proposed Gujrat ” love jihad ” law will most likely be along the lines of those in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and a few other states.
